Ways to Obtain the Green Card or Become a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR)

Generally, to become a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR or also known as a green-card holder), the person must be eligible under one of the categories listed below. There are many ways to become an LPR.

  • Process through Family

  • Process through Employment

  • Process through Refugee or Asylee Status

  • Process through Special Immigrant Application

  • Process through Human Trafficking and Crime Victims

  • Process through Victims of Abuse

  • Process through Other Categories

  • Process through Registry

Have you ever heard of “the process through Registry” to become a Green-card holder or an LPR?

Anyone may be eligible to receive a Green Card (or adjustment as an LPR) under the registry provisions if they meet all the following conditions even if they are currently in the United States unlawfully.

  • they entered the United States prior to Jan. 1, 1972

  • they have resided in the United States continuously since they entered

  • they have good moral characters

  • they are not ineligible for naturalization (citizenship)

  • they are not removable (deportable) under Section 237(a)(4)(B) the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)

  • they are not inadmissible under Section 212(a)(3)(E) of the INA or as a criminal, procurer, other immoral person, subversive, violator of the narcotics laws or alien smuggler

The advantage of an individual applying under the registry provisions is that they are not required to undergo a medical exam.
